St Michael and All Saints Church, Brougham Street, Edinburgh

Our style of worship

St Michael and All Saints Church has been described as a shrine of the Anglo-Catholic movement in Scotland. The highlight of our worship each week is the High Mass celebrated at 11 a.m. every Sunday morning.

worship at st michael'sThe service follows the order of the 1970 Scottish Liturgy. As adherents to the Anglo-Catholic tradition, incense, bells and music play an integral part in our worship and the ritual and beauty of the liturgy is an important aid to our worship.

We follow a formal liturgy but our worship aims to be inclusive. It doesn't matter if you don't stand up or sit down at the same time as everyone else, or if you don't feel comfortable making the sign of the cross. Just come and sit, watch and listen, sing and pray with us and stay for coffee afterwards. The service book we use will also give you more explanations about what we do in our services and why.

Each Sunday Evening we also have a service of Choral Evensong and Benediction at 6.30 pm. Evensong is a traditional service, with readings and prayers, psalm, Magnificat, Nunc Dimittis and anthem sung by the choir. It is followed seamlessly by the service of Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, when we rejoice in the Lord's continuing presentation of himself to the world. It is a beautiful, meditational service, an appropriate end to Sunday and preparation for the rigours of the week ahead.

In June 2005 one of our services was reviewed by a 'mystery worshipper' from the Ship of Fools. You can read the review here
