Music

church blue line

Music is an essential part of our services of High Mass and Evensong & Benediction. The church's musical tradition is maintained by one of the best choirs in the city, directed by Roderick Bryce. The organist is Philip Sawyer.

stained glassEvery Sunday the choir sing the Kyrie, Sanctus, Benedictus and Agnus Dei from a mass setting by composers such as Byrd, Palestrina, Victoria, Howells and Leighton.

This allows the congregation to have the spiritual space to turn towards God in their own ways, while the music quiets the ceaseless noise of our minds in this busy world.

In the Festival, more elaborate mass settings are sung, often involving a small orchestra as well, but still forming part of the liturgy, as originally intended by the composers.

The Choir Director at St Michael and All Saints is Roderick Bryce.

The choir rehearses from 9.30 a.m. each Sunday (with extra rehearsals for concerts and Festival services) and from 5.45 for Evensong. If you can read music and have some singing experience and are interested in joining the choir, see Roderick Bryce after one of the services.

Our Organist, Philip Sawyer, is an experienced church organist and recitalist. Each Sunday he gives us the opportunity to hear organ music in the context for which it was written and, as far as possible, in the correct liturgical season. (visit Philip's web site)
